This week in the Garden: Weeding and Mulching!

Greetings all,

This week in the garden our main focus is to remove the weeds that tower high after a long summer of constant rain and mulch around the plants that survived the heat!

Mulching has many benefits aside from creating an attractive area for your garden.

  • Mulch insulates the soil which helps provide a buffer from hot and cold temperatures.
  • Mulch retains water to keep the roots moist.
  • Mulch keeps weeds out.
  • Mulch prevents soil compaction.
  • Mulch reduces lawn mower damage.
Our biggest goal is to reduce weediness especially around the base of the plants. Of course weeds can get through mulch at times but this certainly prevents them to a certain extent.

Something to consider when you decide to mulch an area is how much you will really need! PRO TIP: always estimate how many bags/how large of a load you need then add 3/4 because mulch goes quickly.

We always pile our mulch on about 3-4 inches but the more the better as long as you don't overdo it around the base of the plant.

Here is a picture of ONE wheel barrel full of mulch once it is spread....

Now when I was pushing this load of mulch it certainly felt like it would cover more than this small space around a couple blueberry plants... Moral of the story: OVERESTIMATE. :)
